How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

Start with the place you want to grow, then choose a bed size you can reach and a soil blend suited to your plants. Calculate fill from inside dimensions.

Before you start

What to have ready

  • A location with suitable sunlight and access to water
  • Inside bed length, width, and planned fill depth
  • Frame material, fasteners, and level
  • Soil and compost blend appropriate to what you will grow
  • Volume or bag size printed by your supplier

Step by step

Make a clear plan

  1. 01

    Choose the site and size

Check light, drainage, water access, and walking space. Choose a width you can reach across without stepping into the soil.

  2. 02

Measure the inside of the bed

Decide the frame footprint and actual fill height. Record inside length and width because the frame material takes up space.

  3. 03

    Assemble and level the frame

Cut and fasten the frame according to the material instructions. Check the corners and level before filling.

  4. 04

    Prepare the ground and fill

Loosen the ground below an open-bottom bed where appropriate. Use a soil mix suitable for the plants and local conditions; do not assume mulch is a substitute for soil.

  5. 05

    Calculate and order soil

Multiply inside length by inside width and fill depth. Convert to cubic yards for bulk delivery, or use the printed bag volume to estimate whole bags.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calculating from outside frame dimensions.
  • Using the full frame height when the planned fill height is lower.
  • Treating a generic soil blend as suitable for every plant or site.
