How to Paint a Room

Plan the room first, protect what stays, repair the surface, then paint in a consistent order. Your paint quantity depends on wall size, openings, coats, and product coverage.

Before you start

What to have ready

  • Tape measure and the paint product coverage on the label
  • Drop cloths, painter’s tape, and cleaning supplies
  • Patch compound, sanding sponge, and primer if needed
  • Brush, roller, tray, extension pole, and a safe ladder

Step by step

Make a clear plan

  1. 01

    Measure before buying

Measure room length, width, and wall height. Record doors and windows, decide whether to paint the ceiling and trim, and choose how many coats you need. Use the Paint Calculator to turn those measurements into gallons.

  2. 02

    Clear and protect the room

Move smaller furniture out, group heavy pieces in the center, cover furniture and floors, and remove wall décor and outlet or switch plates. Keep the work area clear.

  3. 03

    Prepare the walls

Clean the surface, patch holes and cracks, sand repairs smooth, and remove sanding dust. Let the wall dry. Prime bare or repaired areas when the product instructions call for it.

  4. 04

    Paint in a workable order

If included in your project, start with the ceiling and trim. On walls, use a brush for edges and corners, then roll the broad areas while the edge is still wet.

  5. 05

Let the first coat dry and inspect

Follow the paint label for recoat time. Check the wall in good light, apply the next coat, and remove tape according to the product instructions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying from floor area alone: paint covers wall or ceiling surface, not just the floor.
  • Skipping surface preparation or assuming every primer has the same coverage.
  • Treating an example drying time as a substitute for the actual product label.
