How to Measure a Room for Furniture

A piece can fit on a floor plan and still block a door or fail to pass through a hallway. Make a simple sketch with the clear space and delivery route.

Before you start

What to have ready

  • Tape measure and a simple room sketch
  • Wall lengths and ceiling height
  • Door and window widths, positions, and opening direction
  • Hallways, stairs, elevators, and turns on the delivery path
  • Furniture width, depth, height, and any removable parts

Step by step

Make a clear plan

  1. 01

    Draw the outline

Sketch each wall, alcove, and corner. Label measurements on the sketch rather than relying on memory. For irregular rooms, break the outline into simple sections.

  2. 02

    Mark fixed features

Record the distance from each corner to door and window openings. Mark vents, radiators, outlets, columns, and the swing of every door or cabinet.

  3. 03

    Check the footprint and access

Compare the furniture width and depth with the clear space it will occupy. Leave room for walking, opening drawers, and using nearby furniture.

  4. 04

    Measure the delivery route

Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway, stair turn, and elevator opening between delivery and the room. Compare these with the packaged and assembled furniture dimensions.

  5. 05

    Verify the final choice

Tape the furniture outline on the floor and open nearby doors or drawers. Recheck critical dimensions with a tape measure before ordering.

Double-check

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using room area alone to decide whether furniture fits.
  • Forgetting door swing, baseboards, or the route into the room.
  • Relying on a rough phone measurement for a tight fit.
