How to Measure for Curtains

The window size is only the starting point. Rod position, desired fullness, hanging hardware, and the size of a single panel determine what you need to buy.

Before you start

What to have ready

  • Window width measured outside frame to outside frame
  • Available wall space on both sides
  • Planned rod or track mounting height
  • Distance from the hanging point to the floor or sill
  • Width and length of one chosen panel; panels per package

Step by step

Make a clear plan

  1. 01

    Measure the window width

Measure the outside width of the frame. Decide how far the rod should extend beyond each side so the curtains can cover the opening and stack back.

  2. 02

    Choose the hanging position

Check the wall or ceiling mounting position against the window, sill, radiators, and nearby furniture. Measure from the actual hanging point to where the curtain should end.

  3. 03

    Choose fullness and count panels

Multiply rod width by the fullness you want, then divide by the width of one panel and round up. Check whether your chosen product is sold singly or as a pair.

  4. 04

    Confirm finished length

Compare your measured drop with the product length. Rod pockets, rings, clips, hems, and shrinkage can alter the finished hanging length.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering panels from glass width alone.
  • Confusing the width of one panel with the width of a two-panel package.
  • Measuring length before deciding where the rod or track will hang.
