Asphalt Calculator
Estimate asphalt mixture for driveways, paths, or paving layers from finished thickness and mix density. Combine sections, subtract exclusions, and plan material weight and hauling cost.
Worked example
- Finished volume
- 250 cu ft
- With 10% allowance
- 19.938 US tons
- 20-ton minimum · 0.5-ton steps
- 20 US tons
Illustrative example. Measurements, allowances, product details, and prices are not prefilled from this example.

Measure first
Match thickness and density to the same mix condition.
Use finished compacted thickness, not the thickness of loose material before rolling. Enter your supplier’s compacted mix density. For different asphalt mixtures, calculate separately; for multiple layers of the same mix, use separate included sections.
Volume
Footprint area × finished thickness gives cubic feet. Convert thickness from inches to feet before multiplying. Excluded sections are deducted before allowance.
Weight
Cubic feet × density (lb/cu ft) ÷ 2,000 = US short tons. One metric tonne is 1,000 kg; one US short ton is 907.18474 kg.
Purchase weight
Apply extra allowance to measured mix weight. Use the larger of that target and the supplier’s minimum; then round up to the weight ordering increment.
Material cost
Order weight × entered price per selected weight unit + quoted total hauling fee. Unit changes convert the entered weight quantities and price.
From measurement to purchase
At an illustrative density of 145 lb/cu ft, 1,000 sq ft paved 3 inches thick needs 36,250 lb, or 18.125 US short tons. With 10% extra, the target is 19.9375 tons. A 20-ton minimum and 0.5-ton increments give a 20-ton order. At an illustrative $100/ton plus $200 hauling, material and hauling total $2,200.
FAQ
Asphalt planning questions
Does this calculate asphalt binder or the whole mixture?
The whole asphalt mixture, including aggregate and binder. It does not estimate binder percentage, asphalt emulsion coverage, or sealcoat.
What density should I use?
Use density from the asphalt plant or mix specification, matching the compacted condition used for your finished thickness. The example density is illustrative, not a default or recommendation.
Should I add a compaction percentage?
No loose-depth factor is added when finished compacted thickness and matching compacted density are entered: the required mass is already determined. Use extra allowance only for handling losses or measurement uncertainty.
Can I calculate multiple paving layers?
Yes, when they share the same density. Add a section for each layer using its own thickness. Use separate calculations for different mixes or densities. Avoid counting the same layer twice.
What does the cost cover?
Entered asphalt material price times rounded order weight, plus the total quoted hauling fee. Base preparation, milling, grading, installation, equipment, tax, and other fees are excluded. This is not a complete driveway construction quote.
Are tons and tonnes interchangeable?
No. A US short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Select the units used on your supplier quote. The result displays both conversions.
