Joint size + tiled area + packages
Grout Calculator
Estimate dry grout weight from your tile size, joint width, joint depth, and tiled area. Add package size to see how many to buy.
Example only
- Tile size
- 12 × 12 in
- Joint width × depth
- ⅛ × ⅜ in
- Extra allowance
- 10%

How to measure
What changes grout quantity?
Small tile and wide or deep joints need more grout per square foot. Measure the installed area, not the extra tile you buy for cuts.
Measure the area
Add the square footage that will actually receive tile. Exclude untiled openings.
Measure joints
Use one tile or mosaic piece and the grout joint width and fill depth.
Check before buying
Product density, tile texture, and cleanup can change real use. Compare with the manufacturer’s chart.
The math
From joint volume to grout weight
Example: 100 sq ft of 12 × 12 in tile
- For ⅛ in wide and ⅜ in deep joints, estimated joint volume is 112.5 cu in.
- At an assumed dry grout density of 100 lb per cu ft, that is about 6.51 lb before extra.
- With 10% extra, plan for about 7.16 lb. A 10 lb package is one whole package.
The weight is an approximation for dry grout. Use the chosen grout’s coverage chart for the final purchase.
