How to measure

Where to find thinset coverage

Mortar coverage depends on the product and trowel. Match the coverage row on the product sheet to the trowel you plan to use.

01

Measure the area

Add the square footage that will actually receive tile. Exclude untiled openings.

02

Read product coverage

Use the low and high square-foot coverage shown for one package and your trowel.

03

Check before buying

Substrate flatness, tile backs, and application can change real coverage. Confirm with the product sheet.

The math

From coverage to whole bags

Example: 100 sq ft with 55–65 sq ft per bag

  1. Add 10% extra: 100 × 1.10 = 110 sq ft of planned coverage.
  2. At 55 sq ft per bag, 110 ÷ 55 = 2 whole bags to buy.
  3. At 65 sq ft per bag, 110 ÷ 65 also rounds up to 2 bags.

The lower end of the product’s range gives the conservative purchase count.
